How AI Translation Is Transforming Team Communication at Sydney FC

How AI Translation Is Transforming Team Communication at Sydney FC
Contents

In the world of professional soccer, many critical decisions often unfold off the pitch. Pre-match tactical meetings, in-game adjustments in the locker room, one-on-one conversations between coaches and players—these moments shape a team's performance on the field.

For players hailing from across the globe, these communication scenarios carry an added layer of complexity. Today's professional club squads are often highly international, with a single team potentially featuring players from South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia itself. Diverse backgrounds bring not only varied playing styles but also necessitate constantly adapting communication methods.

In the Sydney FC locker room, a new technology is transforming these daily interactions.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the team has begun using AI real-time translation devices from Timekettle to support training sessions, meetings, and everyday communication. (*This collaboration is non-commercial and focused on providing translation support.)

Before introducing this technology, the team relied primarily on traditional methods: coaches delivered instructions in English, with some players relying on teammates or staff for assistance; during one-on-one conversations, impromptu helpers were sometimes needed for translation. While functional, this process occasionally resulted in minor delays in conveying details or required new signings to exert extra effort during their initial weeks to keep pace.

The Locker Room Before AI Translation

In many international teams, certain players naturally step up as the 'bridge' between teammates. For example, if someone on the team speaks both English and Spanish, they might help teammates understand discussions. Sometimes coaches would slow down their speech or use simpler expressions to ensure information was understood.

These methods have long been the norm in international soccer locker rooms.

However, as team rosters grow increasingly diverse, communication scenarios become more complex. A single tactical discussion often involves multiple players, each with different linguistic backgrounds.

How to ensure information reaches everyone directly has gradually become a key concern for teams.

When AI Translation Enters the Locker Room: Sydney FC's New Way of Communication

It all began when Alexander Baumjohann, the club's Head of Player Management, stumbled upon the technology. He felt it was worth a try and reached out to Timekettle. A set of devices soon arrived at Sky Park, Sydney FC's training base. The team started small-scale trials, testing it first in meeting rooms and one-on-one conversations.

Head Coach Talay recalls the initial attempts: We first tried it with Alex—he spoke German, I spoke Turkish, and the results were astonishing. We conversed with remarkable fluency." Soon, the technology expanded into more scenarios.

During team meetings, Coach Talay wore a piece of Timekettle X1 earbud and stood at the front explaining tactics on the whiteboard while players connected devices through a QR code and get translation in their preferred languages. Translation occurred nearly in real time, maintaining natural speaking pace.

During one-on-one conversations in the locker room or on the sidelines, both coach and player wore headphones, enabling them to converse as if speaking the same language.

Campuzano noted this approach allowed him to express tactical insights or personal feelings more naturally, without searching for the right English words.

    The Tools Behind the Transformation

    W4 — Built for Face-to-Face In-depth Communication

The W4 translation earbuds enable simultaneous interpretation in face-to-face conversations. This means both participants can speak naturally without pausing for translation. The system processes speech in real time, allowing both sides to hear the translated message instantly.

Bone conduction technology enables devices to more accurately capture the speaker's voice in noisy environments while reducing background interference. Whether it's quick sideline feedback, personalized tactical coaching, or private post-game reviews, this approach helps keep communication both immediate and personal.

X1 — Idea for Translating Group Discussions

Sydney FC use Timekettle X1 to do group translation

Beyond supporting diverse one-on-one offline communication scenarios, a key feature of the X1 is its Group Translation functionality.

For example, Presentation Mode: When a speaker addresses an audience, attendees simply scan a shared QR code with their phones to join the meeting and view  real-time translations on their devices. This approach is ideal for tactical meetings like those at Sydney FC, as well as corporate conferences, training sessions, or multilingual communication scenarios.

For simultaneous interpretation involving more than two languages, multiple X1 devices can be deployed together. This solution supports simultaneous translation for up to 5 languages and approximately 20 participants, enabling smoother communication for multilingual teams.

    Subtle Changes Within the Team

After a few weeks of use, subtle yet meaningful changes began to appear within the team. New signings integrated into everyday discussions more quickly. Veteran players found it even easier to joke around with their new teammates. The pace of tactical meetings also became smoother, as everyone could follow the discussion in sync.

As a Sydney Morning Herald reporter described after experiencing it firsthand: When Campuzano communicated directly with Coach Talay in Spanish, the exchange felt as natural as if they were speaking the same language.

Modern clubs increasingly rely on international talent, where effective communication underpins team cohesion and on-field performance. AI real-time translation transforms language from a “barrier to overcome” into a “naturally flowing bridge.”
